Yoga for Children & Teens — Capitol Hill & DC Metro Area

parents and young children having fun in yoga class

Where kids come to move, breathe, and be exactly who they are.

School-age kids are managing more than they let on. Homework, friendships, schedules, screens, and the low-grade pressure of growing up in a city that takes achievement seriously — even at age six. Yoga gives them somewhere to put all of that down for an hour.

At Breathing Space, kids yoga is genuinely fun. There are animal poses and adventure stories and games that get everyone moving. There is also — woven throughout — real skill-building: focus, breath awareness, physical confidence, and the ability to return to calm after big energy or big feelings. These are tools that show up later, at school, at home, and everywhere in between.

The best part, according to most kids, is that nobody is keeping score.

What Happens in Kids or Family Yoga Class?

Classes move through age-appropriate yoga poses and sequences, creative movement, breathing exercises, games, and relaxation — all built around a theme that gives the session shape and keeps kids engaged from warmup to savasana. Younger classes weave in songs, stories, and imaginative play. Older classes may include journaling, art, or discussion. Every class ends with some form of quiet relaxation.

Family yoga classes follow the same structure, with an emphasis on activities that parents and children do together. If you have a child at the edge of an age range, siblings one year younger or older are typically welcome — contact us if you're not sure.

Breathing Space also offers Yoga Trapeze for ages 8 and up — traditional yoga asana, breathwork, and relaxation built around aerial yoga trapeze rigs. And when school's out, Kids Yoga Day off and Summer Camp take everything we do in class and turn it into a full day of activities.

Upcoming Classes

Returning students who are subscribed to emails have been sent an access code to sign up early. Baby Yoga & Play and Pop Up classes do not require codes.

How enrollment works

Kids and family yoga classes run in multi-week sessions — typically 6 to 8 weeks — and meet at the same time each week. Registration is required. We run four semesters per year, beginning in September, January, April, and June.

Age ranges are posted with each class. Most classes work well for a span of about three years, and siblings one year younger or older than the stated range are often welcome. Contact us if you have questions about fit.

Family yoga registrations include one adult per child. The same adult doesn't need to come every week — any of your child's favorite caregivers is welcome. Additional adults can be added at the sibling discount rate. Siblings receive an automatic 50% discount.

We know that committing to a semester feels like a risk when you've never been. Our no-risk refund policy means you can register with confidence: if the class genuinely isn't the right fit after the first session, you can withdraw and receive a prorated refund.

Returning students receive early enrollment access via email. Subscribe to our newsletter to be notified when classes are enrolling.

Current classes that are no longer visible on registration pages can still be found on our class calendar.

What our Students Say

Arthur loves preschool yoga class! He's always singing the songs. The other day he was supposed to be napping and I hear from his room "up up and away half moon." It's a great opportunity for him to be around other kids his age since he's not in daycare.

Our daughter had a wonderful 5-year-old birthday party at Breathing Space Yoga. The staff did a terrific job of keeping 15 high-energy kids fully engaged in fun and healthy activities for a full hour, before proceeding to presents, games, and cake. Highly recommend!
